Enable promotes equality and diversity

Case Study: Hayleigh Hopewell

Hayleigh HopewellHayleigh Hopewell left school at 16. Sixth form was not an option as she hadn’t enjoyed her time at school and college didn’t appeal either. She wanted to do an Apprenticeship, so she applied for a few and had several interviews. Unfortunately, none of these resulted in a job.

Hayleigh went to Connexions for help and they referred her to the NEET moves project run by Rushmere Academy (part of Enable’s ESF NEET contract).

Here Hayleigh gained more confidence and developed her CV and interview skills. The boost she got from the project lifted her spirits. At the end of the programme Rushmere offered Hayleigh some work experience, and she soon settled in.

The Rushmere team had been interested in offering an Apprenticeship to the right candidate for a while. Manager Ian Mackay said, “We wanted someone who would understand the work we do with young people from their point of view, but at the same time could cope with the pressure in a busy office/reception environment. Our business has grown over the past five years and the needs for admin support and customer care has increased. What better ambassador than a young person who has succeeded at a difficult time for employment.”

When Ian and the Rushmere team saw how well Hayleigh’s work experience was going, they decided to offer her an Apprenticeship in Business Administration. They turned to Enable for support and Alexis Rich guided them through the process and soon after Hayleigh started work.

Hayleigh said, “I’m really pleased to be doing an Apprenticeship. It’s going really well and I’m cracking on with my training. I’ve wanted to do an Apprenticeship since I left school and it’s working out great.”

Ian Mackay thinks Apprenticeships have benefits for business and society. “We wanted to employ a young person who could be coached and nurtured in the philosophy and ethos of our business, but who could also bring new ideas to the table. Apprenticeships promote confidence in young people and give them a sense of belonging and being valued. We wanted someone who is an all rounder and will assist with preparing resources, clearing rooms and talking with the young people. It is much more than just a job. Hayleigh fitted all the criteria. When the need arises we will definitely employ another Apprentice.”
