Enable's Community Action Programme (CAP) was launched in November as part of an East Midlands pilot project for Jobcentre Plus. It aims to help claimants move off benefits and into employment by equipping them with a valuable period of work experience. This enables them to develop disciplines and skills associated with sustained employment.
Samya Iqbal was referred onto the programme in November 2011. She wanted to get into youth work as she was keen to work with young people. Through the programme , Samya was offered a six-month placement at Learn2Learn Comprehensive.
Learn2Learn is an alternative learning provider, helping youngsters who have difficulty in engaging in a mainstream schooling environment.
Samya settled in quickly. "So far, I have spent most my time working with small groups, helping to run sessions and increase learner motivation and participation. I have had the opportunity to get to know these people well and have thoroughly enjoyed supporting them."
"I have worked closely with Vicky and Justin at Learn2Learn who have given me invaluable support and advice. As a result of the placement organised by Enable, I am now about to start a Level 2 Youth Work Apprenticeship after a twelve-week introduction. I would like to thank the team at Learn2Learn for all of their encouragement and look forward to continuing to work with them whilst undertaking my Apprenticeship. I have found an area in which I am really interested and will now have the job of my dreams!"
If your organisation is interested in taking on a placement and giving someone valuable work experience, please contact Alona, Placements Officer at Enable. For further information please email Alona at alona@enable.uk.net or telephone her on 0115 9349517.
