Community & Employment

Community Engagement

Nottingham is the 6th richest and also the 7th poorest City in the UK. To address this inequity the voluntary and community, public and private sectors have been brought together under One Nottingham with the aim of combining the knowledge and skills of a range of partners to improve employment rates for those living in the most disadvantaged wards. By linking more closely with our priority communities we can gain a better understanding of the needs and barriers to achieving improved employability within the eligible workforce.

Nottingham's Learning Champions

In March 2007 The Learning Champions began operating in nine disadvantaged wards across the City of Nottingham.
27 Learning Champions were employed to work within those communities to provide individual client support into volunteering, training and other provision that would help them secure employment.

Learning Champions could be found at a range of events including local Park Life's, Goose Fair, the Riverside Festival and Job Fairs. With clipboard in hand the Champion teams were passionate about helping their clients.

Funding for the Learning Champions project ended in September 2008. The Champions have engaged over 15,000 people and supported over 4,000 into training, volunteering and advice.
In recognition of the Learning Champions' activity and their achievement, a celebration event will take place at Trent Fm Arena on 24th October 2008.
There will be guest speakers including Andrew Balchin the Chief Executive of One Nottingham.
